SR 34 Resurfacing Project Begins Tonight

WHEN: 8 p.m. until 6 a.m., nightly, Monday, June 6 through Tuesday, August 30, weather permitting. (After this first week, work will be conducted most weeks on a nightly schedule of 8 p.m. until 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday.) You will be notified of any scheduled date changes.

WHERE: SR 34 eastbound between (SR 14) Jackson Street and SR 154

WHAT: The Georgia DOT has been notified by the contractor of single lane closures on SR 34 eastbound for resurfacing. Delays are expected in the area as work occurs.

This project consists of 6.966 miles of milling, single surface treatment paving, leveling and plant mix resurfacing on SR 34 beginning at SR 14 (Jackson Street) and extending east of SR 154. No lane closures will be conducted between the hours of 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, or between the hours of 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Sundays.

This is a WORK ZONE and extreme caution is necessary. Motorists are advised to reduce speeds as they travel through this construction work zone. Message signs, barrels and cones will be utilized to alert the public of the upcoming changes. Drivers should be aware that personnel and equipment will be operating in close proximity to travel lanes.

Each day, hundreds of Georgia Department of Transportation employees and contractors work on dozens of highway, bridge and intersection improvements throughout the state. Their work often brings them and heavy machinery in close proximity to travel lanes. Fifty-seven Georgia DOT personnel and many more motorists, passengers and contractors’ workers have been killed in highway work zone accidents since 1973. City of Newnan's New Mobile App and Request Online System

‘Get your Fix’

The City of Newnan has become one of a handful of communities around the country to leverage Smartphone technology to encourage citizens to report service needs or issues of concern. Leveraging SeeClickFix, a tool that can be used on any Android, Blackberry or iPhone, citizens can simply click a picture of an issue and send it to the City of Newnan. Issues can also be reported using the SeeClickFix link on the City’s website.

SeeClickFix.com is an online web application that allows any individual to report non-emergency issues such as graffiti, potholes or traffic safety issues on a map for everyone to see. Once reported, the issue appears as a flag on a Google Map that can be viewed from the City of Newnan website or within the SeeClickFix application. Other viewers can click on the flag to make additional comments or simply to indicate that they, as well, want the issue addressed. Users also have the option of “following” the issue to see what is being done about it, track how long it takes for the issue to be resolved, or just to see what others may be saying about it.

“We are very excited about the new SeeClickFix tool,” says Mayor Keith Brady. “We believe it will improve the ability of citizens to communicate with us, improve our efficiency in addressing issues, and make our efforts more transparent to taxpayers.”

The technology uses the GPS in smartphones to identify the specific location of the problem, allowing the City to more efficiently dispatch work crews, codes enforcement officers, or other personnel to the scene. Those using a computer to report an issue can either enter a specific street address or pinpoint the location on a map.

SeeClickFix is a third party application developed by a Connecticut-based company.

The City of Newnan began testing the tool for a couple of weeks prior to announcing to the public its availability.“ We have been on social media for a couple of years now and this new mobile app was the next logical step to become more engaged with citizens so that it would be easier for everyone to report issues they were concerned about,” said Gina Snider, Newnan’s Public Information Officer. “The system works perfectly with GIS maps to better pinpoint the location of an issue and that would allow users to include a photo of what they were seeing. One day we saw an article about the City of Alpharetta using SeeClickFix, and our city manager said, ‘That is exactly what we need.’”

City officials say that once the City researched SeeClickFix, the partnership with the third part vendor was an easy choice.

“The cost to adopt SeeClickFix is much less than we would have experienced by building an application from scratch,” Snider explains. “More importantly, the company does not sell or share the personal information of SeeClickFix users, and the application has been proven by use in other communities.”

The City believes that the information provided by citizens through the SeeClickFix tool will help to improve the efficiency of its operations and reduce costs..

“When an issue was reported using web generated complaints or phone calls there was usually not enough information included for us to properly respond to the complaint,” Snider states. “We would need to send a City employee out to identify the specific location of the issue, determine exactly what needed to be done and what materials would be needed to fix it, and then dispatch a work crew to do the work. Using GPS technology and enabling the citizen to include a photograph when they submit the report should allow us in most cases to eliminate that middle man and simply dispatch appropriate personnel to the site.”

Chamber Announces Pre-Election Candidate Forums October 18

The Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce will host a Candidate Forum on Monday October 18 to give Coweta County citizens the chance to hear ideas from and pose questions to those running for local and national office.

The Monday, October 18 Candidate Forum will be held at the Chamber's offices in Newnan at 6:00 p.m. and will feature U.S. Representative District Three challenger Democrat Frank Saunders and incumbent Republican Lynn Westmoreland. Also for the local Coweta County School Board elections the event will feature District One At Large Incumbent Michael Sumner and challenger April Parker as well as District One contenders Amy Dees, Andrew Krause, and Jimmy Harrison.

The first forum will be Coweta County School Board District 1, the second will be Coweta County School Board District 1 At Large, and the third forum will be U.S. Representative District Three.

Georgia Work Ready Kick-Off Luncheon Set for September 29

A Kick-Off Luncheon for business owners and human resource professionals will be held at Summer Grove Golf Club at noon on September 29, 2010, sponsored by Georgia Work Ready in partnership
with the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce. State Senator Mitch Seabaugh, will speak about the benefits to employers of the Work Ready Program. There is no cost for the luncheon meeting for qualified employers.

Asian Culture Festival Comes to Newnan Sept 25

The Asian American Business Association (AABA) will be hosting the second-annual Asian Culture Festival September 25th during the traditional time of the Chinese Mid-Autumn (Moon) Festival. The event will be held at the Court Square in Newnan from 11:00am to 4:00pm and the opening ceremony will begin at 12:00 pm.

The festival features local vendor-booths, selling a variety of merchandise, food, and beverages; including concessions dedicated to promoting various aspects of Asian culture. Many local non-profit organizations will be in attendance, joined by various artists, dance and cultural performance groups, including live performances.

New to the festival this year, the Taipei Economics and Cultural Office (TECO) will be sponsoring a photo exhibition entitled “Taiwan Sublime”. The exhibit, opening on the day of the festival, showcases the work of four professional Taiwanese photographers, and is co-sponsored by the AABA and the Cultural Art Commission of Newnan City. The exhibit will be hosted at the Panoply Decorating Shop.

In an effort to increase awareness of the Far East culture, the Asian Culture Festival offers many opportunities for new business relationships and cultural exchange. We wish to invite the entire community, and those in the surrounding area to join with us, and help celebrate the Asian Culture Festival in downtown Newnan this year.

Chamber’s Young Professionals Group Hosts After-Hours September 28

The Young Professionals of Newnan-Coweta (YPNC) will host a “Meet and Greet” after-hours cocktail reception at 6pm on Tuesday, September 28 at Newnan’s newest hot spot Octane Coffee & Cocktails, 21 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan. This is a chance for young professionals from throughout the county to get together in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoy some social time, and get to know the area a bit better.

“These events continue to draw a large crowd of young professionals interested in networking and building a stronger base of local connections,” said Andy Dunn, YPNC Board Member and with Canongate Golf Clubs.

Oak Grove Plantation is a restored 1830 plantation with outbuildings, complete with farm animals. Bring your family, a picnic lunch and enjoy the day. There are 5 acres of gardens, including herb garden, formal garden, secret garden, sunken garden, playhouse garden, the list goes on.

The gardens have been ongoing for 27 years. They are an interpretive restoration of what a 19th century plantation owner’s wife might have done. The owners grow heirloom plants and recent introductions. There will be extra plants from the gardens for sale to benefit the cemetery.

Coweta-Fayette EMC and Chamber's Bowling Adventure Turns Back Time to the Totally 80's August 19

For years, The Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce has hosted an annual Bowling Adventure for members and non-members throughout Coweta County. This year's tournament will be Thursday, August 19th and the theme is "Totally 80's" which will feature 80's style costumes and decorations. If you are game for networking or team building opportunities in which teams and individuals enjoy an afternoon of friendly competition, making new business connections and strengthening existing
relationships, then this event is for you.

"This will definitely be a high-energy crowd, so it makes perfect sense for Coweta-Fayette EMC to be the title sponsor," said Mary Ann Bell, Vice president of the utility company. "We think the Chamber adds great value to our community and we encourage anyone and everyone to join the fun. We

The Southern Federal Credit Union to Host Chamber's "Business After Hours"

The Southern Federal Credit Union will host the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce's monthly "Business After Hours" event from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 12. Business After Hours is a
members-only event, which gives Chamber members an informal opportunity to meet and learn about one another and the businesses that serve Coweta County. The Southern Federal Credit Union is located at 232 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan.

Sharpsburg Resident is State Truck Driving Champion

/PRNewswire/ -- John Dillon, of Sharpsburg, was named the best professional truck driver in Georgia after winning the flatbed competition and receiving the highest overall score in the eight competing categories at the 2010 Georgia Truck Driving Championships. The annual event is sponsored by Georgia Motor Trucking Association.

Dillon, who drives for Con-way Freight, now qualifies to compete in the American Trucking Associations' National Truck Driving Championships August 3-7, 2010 in Columbus, Ohio -- also known as the "Super Bowl of Safety." The winners from each of the seven other categories are also eligible to compete in the national championship.

Nearly 400 drivers from all 50 states will compete in Columbus for four days, challenging their driving skills, and knowledge of safety, equipment and the industry. From 18-wheeler five axle sleepers to tank trucks to twin trailers--they will drive a course that recreates situations truck drivers face daily. These maneuvers may include: an alley dock, a rear line stop, a side park, a scale stop, a right turn, a front line stop, and straight line driving through a diminishing clearance.

On Saturday night, August 7, one contestant will drive away as the 2010 National Grand Champion Truck Driver.

"The Truck Driving Championships represent the culmination of the industry's dedication to safety," said Georgia Motor Trucking Association President & CEO Edward Crowell. "I congratulate all the contestants and I hope Georgia cheers for our drivers as they move on to Nationals in Columbus."

Coweta Chamber’s New Young Professionals Group Hosts April 1 Launch Event

A “birthday” celebration of the Young Professionals of Newnan-Coweta (YPNC) will take place at the Summergrove clubhouse on Thursday, April 1 at 6:30 pm to launch the new initiative of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce.

The Young Professionals is modeled after similar groups in other counties and is being launched by the Chamber’s Membership & Marketing Committee. Committee member Chris Herdener, financial services professional and agent with New York Life and the Grant Financial Group, suggested that it was time for Coweta County, with its large and growing base of talented young professionals, to harness the energy and creativity of this pool of talent and the idea quickly took shape.

A birthday theme will set the tone with food, beverages, music, decorations and even a birthday cake for the Business-After-Hours function showcasing the YPNC. There is no cost but those planning to attend should call the Chamber of Commerce at 770-253-2270 to make reservations. The event is open to the community and attendees need not be a current member of the Chamber.

Membership of the YPNC is open to those between the ages of 21 and 40. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact the Chamber for more details.

Chamber Announces New Young Professionals Group

The Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce is launching a new group specifically for up-and-coming business leaders in Newnan and Coweta County. The Young Professionals of Newnan-Coweta County will offer its members an opportunity to network with one another to share experiences and knowledge that will benefit their growth as professionals and community leaders.

This new group is a project of the Chamber’s Membership & Marketing Committee and the brainchild of committee member and Newnan native Chris Herdener, a financial services professional and an agent with New York Life and the Grant Financial Group. He and other young professionals will serve on the board of the Young Professionals organization.

“I’ve attended meetings of similar organizations in other counties, and saw that there’s a great opportunity to bring young professionals together here at home,” said Herdener. “Our goal is to offer a combination of regular networking events, local service and charitable activities, and ongoing professional development opportunities.

“In addition, we want to make sure that up-and-coming business people are made aware of the resources and connections that the Chamber of Commerce provides, and that they will use the Chamber as they build business and careers here in Coweta County. It also will allow the Chamber to expand its outreach and offerings to this new and growing demographic group.”

The Young Professionals plan to start their activities with after-hours networking events and expert-led “lunch and learn” sessions each month. (Dates will be posted on the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce website, www.newnancowetachamber.org.)

Newnan Fire Department Participates in EMT Training at Central Education Center

Driver Engineer Bart Henson will be joining the paramedic class at the Central Education Center on Tuesday, February 23rd. Henson will be instructing the incident command scenario during the class for students. The scenario will be a welding shop explosion and the aftermath. EMT students will be able to see what is expected and can ask questions during the class.

“This is a great hands-on opportunity for students to learn about incident command scenarios, said Driver Engineer Bart Henson. This gives them a chance to see what it is like in a controlled situation. When you are out on the scene is when this training kicks into gear.”

“Anytime we get an opportunity to teach the next generation of firefighters and EMT’s is a great thing, says Newnan Fire Chief David Whitley.

Chamber Celebrates 62nd Anniversary and Recognizes Four Local Businesses for Significant Economic Contributions

Take a look around Coweta County and you will see signs of economic prosperity. For the past 62 years the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce has played a lead role in promoting an environment in which Chamber members and the community can realize economic prosperity.

On Tuesday, January 26, 2010 from 7:30 to 9:00am at the Central Educational Center, the Chamber will host its 62nd annual meeting. The theme Think Chamber Members First - Inspire & Thrive sets the stage for the member to member program that emphasizes the power of Chamber Members doing business with Chamber Members. "During these tightening economic times, it's a great way to help us all weather the storm successfully. By relying on one another and supporting one another, we'll be helping shore up the entire economy in Coweta County," says Chamber President, Candace Boothby.

* City of Senoia for their vision and supportive actions that are
helping redefine the future potential of their community through innovative
and creative developments

* D & H Distributing for the location of their new facility in the
Coweta Industrial Park which brought more than 145 new jobs to our community

* USDA National Detector Dog Training Center for their investment in
building their new facility in our community, which is recognized as the
number agricultural training facility in the world.

On January 28, 2010, Coweta County will honor its next Citizen of the Year, and the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce wants your nominations by Friday, December 18. Nomination forms are available through the Chamber.

"The Citizen of the Year Award was established by the Chamber in 1992 to recognize individuals with outstanding leadership and citizenship within the community," said Don Chapman, community volunteer and 2009 Citizen of the Year. "These are people who demonstrate exemplary vision, civic pride and a strong commitment to a better Coweta County."

Newnan Downtown Awarded ‘Great Places in Georgia’ By the Georgia Planning Association (GPA)

Whether helping kids get to school safely, planning for inevitable growth or making a serious effort to “go green,” communities all over Georgia were recently recognized at the Georgia Planning Association’s awards ceremony. Newnan’s downtown was selected as the inaugural recipient of this year’s “Great Places in Georgia” award.

The 2009 GPA Chapter Awards were given to plans and projects that showed innovation, transferability, quality, effectiveness of implementation, public participation, technology, equity and sustainability. In addition to the basic planning awards, a new category was created to recognize “great places” in Georgia. The award was established to showcase communities that emphasize a live, work and play environment, safety, conservation, accessibility, and community involvement.

“This is a great honor for our City,” said Planning Director Tracy Dunnavant. “It shows that Newnan has managed to preserve its past while continuing to meet the needs of the future. It’s an award that could only be achieved through the efforts of the community as a whole.”

GPA citied several factors that contributed to downtown Newnan being selected as a “Great Place in Georgia”. Those factors included: Downtown being defined by its history, strong sense of place and engaged community; The antebellum architecture that remains intact in the downtown area; The wide variety of mixed uses in downtown including retail, restaurants, offices, industrial and public uses; The commitment of the City and County governments to keeping their administrative offices downtown; and Newnan’s selection as Georgia’s representative for This Old House’s Best Old House Neighborhoods for 2009.

Other winners of the 2009 GPA Chapter Awards were:

Newnan High School Celebrates Local Veterans

An invitation to local veterans:

The History and Social Studies Department at Newnan High School want to take this opportunity to invite you to our biannual Veteran’s Day held this term on December 11. We hold this event at the end of each school term in order for the students to “put a face” with the events that they have been learning about over the last part of term. Your participation in our school is one of the biggest and most anticipated events of each term. We appreciate the time and effort that you will undertake to help us teach these young people. Thank you!

We will meet at the National Guard Armory across the street on Armory Road between 8:00-8:30AM. When you come in there will some students to greet you, sign you in and help you find a place at a table. There will also be students in the parking area to help you carry anything in. Coffee will be available and breakfast will be served starting around 8:15. The first group of students will come in at about 8:50. They will come and visit at your table and talk to you about your service. If you have any items and/or pictures that you would like to share with the students, please feel free to do so. The first two groups of students will wrap up at about 11:40 and then lunch will come from Quizno’s. We will have 2 groups of students after lunch as well and will close the day at approximately 3:00PM. We would love to have you spend all day with us, but if you can only come during part of the day that is perfectly fine. We would appreciate any time that you can spare for our students.

Also, our second fundraising event will be held on October 26 at the old Sprayberry’s BBQ on 29. Sprayberry’s will donate a part of the profits to our veteran programs if you eat there between 5:00-9:00PM. You can eat in or carry out, just mention that you are supporting Newnan High School history. Thank you to those of you that supported us at Chikfil A on that rainy day in September! If possible, we would appreciate your support with these fundraisers- they are easy for us- we just need to get people out to eat!

Lastly, Newnan High School is still working with the local Historical Society to promote the Society’s Veteran Donation Program. We have saved several things over the last few months that we will be using in class. If you have things from your service that you are not sure what to do with, please contact Mr. Henderson or myself. If any of your friends or neighbors are in this situation, please let them know what we are doing. We do not want these items to land in the trash!

If you have any friends that are veteran’s and might be interested in participating in any of these things, please let me know their name and phone number and I will be glad to contact them. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month And Breast Cancer and Alzheimer Awareness

October is a month of awareness for important issues that we as individuals may face at some time in our life. Breast Cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Domestic Violence all very important and critical topics. Unemployment and home foreclosures are in the media every day.

This brings a strain on the public assistance available to address all issues. The individuals who are unemployed need the basic essentials to daily living, a room to sleep in, food, and clothing. They also need a leg up not a hand out.

Our community is blessed to have so many options and resources that can bring the leg up for these unfortunate individuals to connect with. Along with the food pantry, we have Shiloh Missions, Bridging the Gap, Salvation Army, Goodwill, and many churches that have programs and food pantries that are helping meet these essential needs. Shiloh Missions has implemented a data base that can be used to monitor who is receiving assistance and how often. They have a resource data base that can help direct those who want help to overcome the issues they are currently facing.

And… snugly tucked away in our beautiful city of homes is a secret. This secret is so hidden we only become aware of it when something terrible happens. Domestic violence thrives in our community. Community Welcome House statistics prove it. In December 2008, 474 calls were documented; 153 women and children were admitted to our program with 65 being children. Through September 2009, we have documented 372 calls, admitting 121, with 49 being children.

We are making a difference we know it. Our purpose is to end domestic violence one family at a time. Have we seen success, yes. Social change is difficult. Understanding why the victim stays is impossible for most. Victims who have lived with violence are emotionally connected to the abuser.

Children living and witnessing the abuse are taught to keep the secrets and soon believe it is normal. How do you change what they understand as normal? Think of Jamestown? Have you read “Helter Skelter”? A person learns what they live, life in prison? Is this normal? Think about it.

Fortunately for Coweta County we have a program that redefines normal in the life of a person who is a victim of domestic violence. Time is important when a victim decides to leave. Can this community make a difference? Community Welcome House believes it can. We hope you will help us end the violence by supporting our efforts during October and throughout the year.

The Carnegie Introduces the Honor Book System

The Carnegie invites the public to participate in the honor book system. The honor books are donated for the purpose of trading and sharing reading experiences with others.

Honor book criteria:

You loved the book (no dumping of titles no one would want to read, space doesn’t allow for that)
Books need to be in excellent condition
Hardback or paperback
Fiction or non-fiction
Adult, young adult or children’s books

Drop off donations and fill out a comment sheet at front desk.

Choose a book, take it with you and, upon completion, return it to the Carnegie with your comments in the space provided for the next person to enjoy. All books are one way donations and become part of the honor book system

“We are excited to introduce the honor book system to the Carnegie,” said Amy Mapel, Carnegie Media Coordinator. “I think it will enhance the reading opportunities for the Carnegie patron.”

About the Carnegie
Carnegie is one of the most historically significant structures in downtown Newnan and was built in 1904. The building served as a library until 1987 when a new facility was constructed on Hospital Road. With its iconic lighted sign that states the ‘City of Homes’ on top of the building, citizens recognize the Carnegie when they drive through historic downtown.

The Carnegie was funded by the city of Newnan’s General Fund and partly by 2007 Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). The Carnegie’s cost to be renovated was over $1.5 million dollars to the city. Coweta County Fair Closed Tonight

Due to current and expected weather conditions, the Coweta County Fair will not open tonight. Coweta County, the Kiwanis Club and Belle City Amusements announced just after noon today that they would not open the fairgrounds for the scheduled Monday evening events. At this time, plans are to resume the regular schedule on Tuesday.

Courthouse Committee Seeks Memories and Photos

Work on the historic Coweta County Courthouse continues with the completion date still targeted for early summer of 2010. The Courthouse Citizens Advisory Committee has begun discussions on opening festivities and is asking for the community’s assistance.

The festivities surrounding the opening of the courthouse are not determined yet but the committee has one project that they’d like to get started. The committee is soliciting individual memories and photos of the courthouse to be used in some type of historical record. The Courthouse represents many things to many citizens and the committee would like to record that and save it for future generations.

“This courthouse is the citizens building. It’s been the heart of Coweta County for over 100 years and we know there are many people with fond memories of the building and the square,” said Patricia Palmer, Director of Public Affairs for Coweta County. “I’ve had friends, family and complete strangers tell me stories about things they remember at the square and how the courthouse was the backdrop for family memories. That’s what we want to hear about.”

Memories can be personal, told to you by a friend or family member OR memories of major county events and how the courthouse was a part of that time in history. “If your granddaddy told you about playing checkers on the square, or you loved the Christmas lights that used to be draped from the high points on the dome or if you always rested on the courthouse steps when trick or treating with the downtown merchants, we’d like to hear about it and, hopefully, get a photo of it as well.”

The committee has not finalized exactly how the memories and photos will be used but the plan is to gather them in some type of document or printed piece that will also trace the history of the courthouse and the work done in the recent rehabilitation. Images and memories can be submitted via e-mail to cowetainfo@coweta.ga.us or sent to Patricia Palmer, Coweta County, 22 East Broad Street, Newnan, GA 30263. The following release must be included for your memories and photos to be used. The information is posted on the county website as well.

Meet Your Commissioners!

The Coweta County Commission has scheduled Town Hall Meetings in each of the five districts in 2009. The format is casual and citizens are encouraged to drop in and meet the commissioner for their district.

The next Town Hall Meeting will be Tuesday September 29, 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the Central Library on Literary Lane, just off Ebenezer Church Road, Lower Fayetteville Road and Hwy. 154. This meeting will be hosted by Rodney Brooks, Commissioner for District 4. The formal is “open house” and representatives from many county departments will be on hand to visit with citizens.

Flooding in Northwest Coweta County

Due to the recent rains, flooding conditions have occurred in some areas of northwest Coweta County. Coweta County Road Crews and Emergency Management have been and continue to monitor the situation. At mid day today, flooding occurred over the road at 960 Payton Road and Coweta County crews barricaded the road at that point. By mid afternoon, the rising waters had flooded a bridge on the east end of Payton Road, making one stretch of Payton Road and Cliff Payton Circle inaccessible.

Flat Rock Road is the only alternative route for some of the people who live in this area. The Coweta County Road Department has added more gravel to the old portion to keep it passable and the other portion has recently been completely rebuilt as part of the work associated with the coming Chattahoochee Bend State Park.

The Coweta County Fire Department is on hand now and using small boats to assist and evacuate those who live in the inaccessible area on the east end of Payton Road and Cliff Payton Circle.

Road crews have also closed the boat ramp to the Chattahoochee River at Carrollton Hwy. The National Weather Service is predicting that the Chattahoochee River will crest at 28.5 feet sometime tomorrow.

Citizens are encouraged to avoid the area and to approach all water on roadways with caution.

Chamber's Coweta Core Industries Summit FOLLOW-UP!

The Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce is hosting a follow-up Coweta Core Industries Summit for several of Coweta's core industries. The roundtable discussions include small business, big box retail and financial service and will be held on Wednesday, September 23,
from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Central Educational Center. The roundtables will be facilitated discussions about the challenges, opportunities and the specific issues faced within each sector. There is no charge for this event, but reservations are required by calling or emailing

This roundtable is a follow-up to Coweta Core Industries Summit of industry-specific roundtables the Chamber hosted earlier this year. The first roundtables focused on the financial service, real estate, big box retail, small business, hospitality, healthcare, and manufacturing

"We developed this series of roundtables to help determine the specific needs and desires of Coweta's major industry groups. In addition to exploring specific services that the Chamber might provide to each, we also hope to uncover some broader issues across the board that we might address together to improve the business environment for everyone," said Tonya Whitlock, West Georgia Technical College.

Newnan High School; More Times to Help Our Veterans

First let me know say thank youo to all of those that made it out to ChikfilA on August 31 to support the local National Guard soldiers. The 2 stores here in Coweta County raised over $4,000. The store that we worked with on Bullsboro Dr. raised around $2,700 of that amount- way more than half of the total amount. Thank you!

I want to let you know about a couple of ways you could really help Newnan High School with our school veteran programs. Many of you over the years have asked us if you could help us by donating money which we have always refused. However, as money has gotten tighter during tough economic times, it has gotten more difficult for our department to raise the money we need to put on the kind of programs involving veterans that we would like to put on. To help us out, both ChikfilA and Sprayberrys BBQ have agreed to give us a percentage of sales on a designated night, just like they did with the National Guard. The price for the food does not change- you pay what you normally would pay; but the company gives us a percentage of the sales during that evening to assist us with our program. Therefore, the more people that come out to purchase food on that evening, the more money that we get for our program. You can come into the dining area, get takeout or you can go through the drive through. Easy for you and us!

We hope that you will help us by coming by ChikfilA and Sprayberrys on the nights listed below. Most of the History Department staff will be there on the designated nights to meet and thank you for your help! The first night will be a week from Monday…Monday, September 21!

Chamber Announces Leadership Coweta Class of 2009-2010

Twenty citizens of Coweta County have begun a seven-month course of study as part of Leadership Coweta, a community leadership development program offered by the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce.

"With every class, participants bring a wide variety of experiences and perspectives about our County, so there's always something new to learn and to consider, both from the presenters and from fellow classmates."

Main Street Newnan Labor Day Weekend Events

Dust off those running shoes! Main Street Newnan’s Annual Mike Fitzpatrick Ford’s Sunrise on the Square Road Race is planned for Saturday, September 5th.

The One Mile Walk/Run begins at 7:45 a.m., followed by the 5K at 8:00 a.m. There will be a short “Tot Trot” following the race. Runners will gather on West Broad Street for the start of the race. The race course continues to Newnan High School and through historic neighborhoods and then finishes at the square.

The entry fee is $20 for runners if received by September 3rd and is $25 on the day of the race. All participants will receive a 100% cotton long sleeved road race t-shirt. Beverages and light refreshments will be available. Tot Trotters will receive a short sleeved youth size t-shirt.

The road race is a fundraiser for the Main Street Newnan program, which hosts about 40 special events throughout the year in downtown Newnan. Along with Main Street Newnan, sponsors of the road race include Mike Fitzpatrick Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Piedmont Newnan Hospital, Coweta Fayette EMC Natural Gas, Bank of Coweta, and Synergy Fitness.

There will be prizes given out to top finishers in male and female categories based on age groups. Non-runners have the phantom runner option, which allows people to support the cause without making the run. Phantom runners can donate to the main street program and receive a t-shirt.
The road race is a part of Main Street’s Labor Day festivities. The Annual Labor Day Sidewalk Sales kicks off at 9 a.m. on Friday and continues on Saturday. The ever-popular Market Days on the Square will also be featured on Saturday.

Georgia Department of Banking and Finance Takes Possession of First Coweta Bank, Newnan, Georgia

The Georgia Department of Banking and Finance (“Department”) took possession of First Coweta Bank, Newnan, Georgia on August 21, 2009. The Superior Court of Coweta County issued an Order appointing the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (“FDIC”) as Receiver of the Bank effective upon the Department taking possession of First Coweta Bank.

The Department took possession of First Coweta Bank pursuant to the Official Code of Georgia, Section 7-1-150(a) which authorizes the Department in its discretion to take possession of the business and property of any state chartered financial institution whenever such financial institution is either insolvent or operating in an unsafe or unsound condition to transact its business, is operating in violation of any court order, statute, rule or regulation, or requests the Department to take possession of its business and property.

Through an agreement with the FDIC, First Coweta Bank will be acquired by United Bank, Zebulon, Georgia.

All deposit accounts of First Coweta Bank have been transferred to United Bank and will be available immediately. On Saturday, August 22, 2009, depositors were able to access their accounts at the former main office and branch locations of First Coweta Bank. Customers of both banks should continue to use their existing branches until United Bank can fully integrate the deposit records of First Coweta Bank. Additionally, the former depositors of First Coweta Bank can continue to access their accounts through automated teller machine transactions, checks and debit transactions.

Local Florist to Support Good Neighbor Day

Residents of Newnan and Coweta County will once again have the unique opportunity to meet each other and develop new friendships when Arthur Murphey Florist hosts its second annual Good Neighbor Day on Wednesday, September 9, 2008. Beginning at 9:00 a.m., Arthur Murphey Florist at 6 LaGrange Street in historic downtown Newnan will give away a minimum of 1500 roses in bunches of a dozen, absolutely FREE to anyone who visits the shop, while supplies last.

Anyone who picks up a dozen free roses will be asked to keep one of the roses and give the others away to 11 different people – spreading goodwill and friendship in the community. In keeping with the spirit of “Good Neighbor Day”, a donation of a non perishable food item for the local food bank would be appreciated but not required. All items collected will be taken directly to the Newnan Food Bank located at One Roof Ministries.

“This is an opportunity for us to motivate our community and get people to show friends, family and strangers how much they care,” says Hutch Murphey, owner. “Newnan and Coweta County is made up of friendly, caring people that can make an impact right here at home.”

Coweta County Holding Millage Steady for 2009

The Coweta County Board of Commissioners voted last night to maintain or reduce the county’s millage rate for 2009.

“We are holding steady or, for the unincorporated area, slightly reducing the millage for 2009,” said Coweta County Commission Chairman Paul Poole. “We feel like it is extremely important that we keep our expenses to a minimum in the current economic market. Our citizens have tightened their belts and expect us to do the same – even while we invest in important infrastructure projects.”

This is the second year in a row that the Commission has either slightly reduced or kept the millage rate steady. The proposed rates are 7.66 for the incorporated areas, which is the same as last year, and 6.93 for the unincorporated areas, which is .05 mills less than last year. The net levy will increase by only $128,764 due to growth in the digest.

The difference in rates is due to the way insurance premium taxes are returned to the county and municipalities. Unincorporated property owners receive credit for the insurance premiums that are returned to the county. Cities and municipalities also receive this credit and can pass it along to their property owners on city tax bills.

Coweta citizens approved a $20 million Fire Bond last November that will vastly improve fire and public safety services in the county. The Fire bond will amount to roughly $28 in taxes for a $150,000 home. These dollars will be used to purchase new fire equipment, build two fire stations and purchase a new, countywide public safety communications system and should result in an improved ISO rating and lower insurance premiums for citizens.

Citizens in the unincorporated areas, along with the municipalities of Moreland, Turin and Sharpsburg, will see an additional line item on their tax bill for this fire bond. The municipalities of Grantville, Senoia and Haralson are participating in this Fire Bond as well and will include the cost on city tax bills.

The state has also made a change that will affect taxpayers. Since 1999, the Georgia General Assembly and the Governor have provided a credit on property tax bills called the Homeowners Tax Relief Grant (HTRG). In recent years, that credit resulted in a $200 - $300 reduction to property tax bills.

Due to financial strains on the state budget, the Georgia General Assembly and the Governor did not fund this credit for 2009 property tax bills. While the HTRG credit may someday be reinstated by the General Assembly, it is not expected to be considered again until state revenues increase significantly. Because of that credit not being funded, the average homeowner will have an increase on their tax bill.

are invited to participate in this 50's style event which features a "Rockin' Around the Lane" theme. Annually people come from all over Coweta County to participate in this afternoon of friendly competition, networking, and team building.

Bring your recyclable electronics to our special Electronics Recycling Day on August 1, 2009 from 8 am - noon at Thomas Crossroads Elementary, 3530 East Highway 34. Coweta County Environmental Management, Creative Recycling Systems of Georgia (CRS), and the Coweta County School System have partnered to provide a location for county residents to recycle obsolete and used electronic devices. Trailers will be set up in the parking lot to collect the items delivered that day.

The electronics items you bring will be recycled into valuable commodities which are circulated back into worldwide production. The items brought will be 100% recycled – plastic, wiring/glass/ all components. Not only does this reduce the volume of items taken to landfills, but it also keeps toxic metals out of landfills. The items will be collected and recycled by CRS. CRS has been an innovator in developing methods to process obsolete electronics with zero waste and less impact on the environment. CRS also takes the electronics left at the Coweta County Transfer Station for recycling.

Sharpsburg Resident is State Truck Driving Champion

/PRNewswire/ -- John Dillon, of Sharpsburg, was named the best professional truck driver in Georgia after winning the flatbed competition and receiving the highest overall score in the eight competing categories at the 2009 Georgia Truck Driving Championships. The annual event is sponsored by the Georgia Motor Trucking Association.

Dillon, who drives for Con-way Freight, now qualifies to compete in the American Trucking Associations' National Truck Driving Championships August 18-22, 2009 in Pittsburgh, Penn. -- also known as the "Super Bowl of Safety." The winners from each of the seven other categories are also eligible to compete in the national championship.

Nearly 400 drivers from all 50 states will compete in Pittsburgh for four days, challenging their driving skills, and knowledge of safety, equipment and the industry. From 18-wheeler five axle sleepers to tank trucks to twin trailers--they will drive a course that recreates situations truck drivers face daily. These maneuvers may include: an alley dock, a rear line stop, a side park, a scale stop, a right turn, a front line stop, and straight line driving through a diminishing clearance.

On Saturday night, August 22, one contestant will drive away as the 2009 National Grand Champion Truck Driver.

The Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce continues to accept applications for the 2009-2010 Leadership Coweta class through the end of this week. Applications are due by 5pm Friday, July 31.

Leadership Coweta provides a unique learning experience for emerging and existing leaders by offering an intense curriculum that trains, empowers, and supports leaders so that they can effect positive community change. The program also creates an awareness of comprehensive community issues and opportunities and features interaction with key community and elected
leaders. This communitywide comprehensive leadership program meets once a month September through March.

During these tough economic times, it's important to put people in places to make connections, build relationships, and to become better equipped to make decisions. Leadership Coweta provides a great opportunity to do just that. Governor Kicks Off Sales Tax Holiday Weekend in Newnan

Beginning at midnight tonight, shoppers will find savings on back to school supplies

Governor Sonny Perdue today visited a Wal-Mart in Newnan to kick off the sales tax free holiday weekend, joining State Rep. Lynn Smith who sponsored this year’s tax holiday bill. Georgia shoppers will be able to purchase clothing items, school supplies, computers and computer accessories free of state and local sales tax during the state’s eighth annual tax-free holiday, which begins at midnight tonight and continues until midnight on Sunday, August 2.

“I encourage parents, students and teachers to take advantage of our eighth annual sales tax holiday to save on purchases of much-needed supplies,” Governor Perdue said. “Experience has shown that many retailers offer additional discounts and sales that result in even more savings for back-to-school shoppers.”

This year’s sales tax holiday is a result of House Bill 120, which Governor Perdue signed into law on May 4.

During the sales tax holiday, clothing and footwear up to $100 per item are exempt from payment of sales tax. There is no limit on the number of shoes and clothing items an individual can buy. If the price of an article of clothing or pair of shoes exceeds $100, the item will be taxed at the full retail price. Clothing accessories, jewelry, handbags, umbrellas, eyewear, watches, watchbands and similar items are not exempt from sales tax during the tax-free period.

School supplies bought for classroom use or classroom-related activities are exempt if they cost $20 or less per item. Qualifying items include pens, pencils, notebooks, paper, book bags, calculators, dictionaries, thesauruses, children’s books and books listed on approved school reading lists for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Sales tax will be due on the purchase of any single school supply item that exceeds $20.

Purchases of personal computers and accessories are exempt up to $1,500 per transaction. Qualifying items in the personal computer exemption category include monitors, personal computer base units, keyboards, handheld computers, printers, modems, non-recreational software and other peripheral devices.

Personal digital assistants are exempt unless they allow voice communication. Other items that would not be exempt are regular cell phones, digital cameras, furniture and any systems, devices, software or peripherals designed or intended primarily for recreational use.

The sales tax exemption for all qualified merchandise is intended only for individuals and their personal use. The exemption does not apply to purchases made for resale, purchases by businesses, for items leased or rented, or items sold at sports facilities, theme parks, restaurants, public lodging establishments, and airports.

Keep Newnan Beautiful Installs First Pet Waste Station in the City

Keep Newnan Beautiful is proud to announce the City’s first pet waste station has been installed at Temple Avenue Park. The Newnan- Coweta Historical Society’s generous donation made the first pet station possible in the city.

Citizens are encouraged to use this station when walking their dogs in the area. The station is located in Temple Avenue Park near the Male Academy Museum.

“Keep Newnan Beautiful is making new goals for the city every day in the fight against litter. Installing this station is another step in the campaign to reduce litter and waste in our city,” says Carol Duffey, Keep Newnan Beautiful Director.

Use Georgia’s Tax Free Holiday to Give Back to Coweta County

Celebrate this Tax Free Holiday by joining the Coweta Good Samaritan Campaign. Beginning Friday, July 31st, when you shop at participating merchants you will be asked if you would like to “round up” your purchase. Saying yes will put your extra change into the community and will help families all over the county.

This pilot program, jointly sponsored by Newnan Coweta Habitat for Humanity and the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce, will benefit Habitat, the Chamber, Community Welcome House and Angel House. The program is the brain child of Bob Peebles, president of Newnan Coweta Habitat board. Peebles stated “This is an opportunity for the citizens of Coweta County to take tax money that they are saving and investing it in the people of Coweta County. This campaign allows a little change to make a big change in our community.”

Newnan Armed Bank Robbery

Today at 9:35am, the Coweta 911 Dispatch Center received a call from The Bank of Georgia at 471 US Highway 29 North, Newnan, that they had been robbed.

Newnan PD and Coweta Co. S.O. units responded to the bank.

Responding officers discovered that a B/M armed with a semi-automatic pistol had entered the bank, pointed the gun at an employee, and demanded money. The robber gave the teller a plastic grocery store bag to put the money in.

After receiving the money, the suspect fled the bank, and was seen running in the direction of the back of a convenience store. From there, he fled across an open field, toward the driveway of a grocery store. It is believed he may have gotten into a waiting car at this point.

A search of the area located some of the money apparently dropped by the suspect as he fled the bank. The trail of money ended at the grocery store driveway. A perimeter was set around the area, and a search by ground units, K-9 units and the Coweta County Sheriff Office helicopter did not locate the suspect.

The suspect is described as a B/M, 5’5”-5’6”, approx. 170-180 lbs, wearing a dark blue ski mask, dark colored gloves, a gray jacket, dark pants and boots. The pistol is described as a large, black semi-automatic pistol. The suspect is considered armed and dangerous. No shots were fired and no one was physically injured during the robbery.

An undetermined amount of money was taken from the bank. Anyone with information concerning this bank robbery is asked to contact Newnan Police Department at 770-254-2355.

Celebrate this Tax Free Holiday by joining the Coweta Good Samaritan
Campaign. Beginning Friday, July 31st, when you shop at participating
merchants you will be asked if you would like to "round up" your purchase.
Saying yes will put your extra change into the community and will help
families all over the county.

This pilot program, jointly sponsored by Newnan Coweta Habitat for Humanity
and the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce, will benefit Habitat, the
Chamber, Community Welcome House and Angel House. The program is the brain
child of Bob Peebles, president of Newnan Coweta Habitat board. Peebles
stated "This is an opportunity for the citizens of Coweta County to take tax
money that they are saving and investing it in the people of Coweta County.
This campaign allows a little change to make a big change in our community."

Chamber President Candace LaForge added "The Coweta Good Samaritan Campaign
can help build a culture of giving to the community by shopping locally. It

Spence Avenue to be Closed for 2 Weeks

GDOT construction crews will begin work on Monday, July 20, 2009. The first priority will be to re-work the stormwater system on Spence Avenue. This work will take approximately 2 weeks. During this 2 week period, Spence Avenue will be closed from the railroad to Greenville Street.

Win the Window in Downtown Newnan

Main Street Newnan premiered a new promotion called “Win the Window” at this year’s 4th of July festivities. The window will be located on South Court Square in the old Globe building.

The window, themed "Summer Stay-cation", is filled with items from Main Street merchants and is valued at over $1,000. Participants have the chance to win everything in the window.

“The merchants have all given really great items for the window, each item worth $50 or more!” said Samantha Hinze, Main Street President.

The first step to register for “Win the Window” is to view the window on South Court Square and read the list of participating merchants. Next, they will need to visit the participating merchant’s stores, find out the retail value of the items on display in the window and fill out those amounts on their entry form.

Once the entry form has been filled out completely, participants can submit their form into the drop box located on South Court Square by the window.

“Molly Morrow at M. Cole Design has come up with a really cool “Win the Window” logo which has been placed in the stores of participating merchants. So be on the look-out!” said Ashley Daniel, Main Street Coordinator.

The “Win the Window” promotion kicked off July 4th. The winner will be revealed Saturday, August 1 at Market Day on the square.

Participants must be 18 or older to register and all valid entry forms must be filled out completely. Only one entry form may be submitted per person.

Coweta’s Dial A Ride Program begins July 1

Coweta County’s long awaited Dial A Ride program (Section 5311) will begin transporting citizens on Wednesday, July 1. The program, which is funded with federal, state and local dollars, provides transit services to business, commercial and activity centers in Coweta County.

Scheduling a trip is easy. Simply call 770-683-RIDE (7433) at least 24 hours in advance. Trips are $3.00 per one way trip. Trips must be within Coweta County and between the hours of 8 am- 5 pm. The van will come to any Coweta address to pick up or drop off.

The program uses a “demand response” model, meaning there are no fixed routes, stops or pick up times. Citizens must call and schedule a needed trip 24 hours in advance and daily routes are generated based on destinations requested. Rides are “first come – first served” based on availability. Peak times are expected to be 8-10 am and 2-5 pm and, conversely, more capacity is expected during off-peak times, 10 am – 2 pm. Service will be provided Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Coweta will ultimately have five 13 passenger vans, two of which will be equipped with a wheel chair lift. Three of the vans are on hand for the program’s kick off and two more will arrive in the next 60-90 days. The operation of the program is handled by Quality Trans, Inc., a third party contractor already operating in Coweta County.

The program is designed and available for anyone who needs transportation within Coweta County, but it is expected that the elderly and the handicapped will be heavy users of the program. The program is projected to make 30,000 trips in its first year.

CharterBank, West Point, Georgia Assumes All of the Deposits of Neighborhood Community Bank, Newnan, Georgia

Neighborhood Community Bank, Newnan, Georgia, was closed today by the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance, which appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as receiver. To protect the depositors, the FDIC entered into a purchase and assumption agreement with CharterBank, West Point, Georgia, to assume all of the deposits of Neighborhood Community Bank.

The four offices of Neighborhood Community Bank will reopen as branches of CharterBank. All of the offices will maintain normal business hours. Depositors of Neighborhood Community Bank will automatically become depositors of CharterBank. Deposits will continue to be insured by the FDIC, so there is no need for customers to change their banking relationship to retain their deposit insurance coverage. Customers should continue to use their existing branches until CharterBank can fully integrate the deposit records of Neighborhood Community Bank. Depositors of Neighborhood Community Bank can access their money by writing checks or using ATM or debit cards. Checks drawn on the bank will continue to be processed. Loan customers should continue to make their payments as usual.

As of March 31, 2009, Neighborhood Community Bank had total assets of $221.6 million and total deposits of approximately $191.3 million. In addition to assuming all of the deposits of the failed bank, CharterBank agreed to purchase approximately $209.6 million of assets. The FDIC will retain the remaining assets for later disposition.

The FDIC and CharterBank entered into a loss-share transaction on approximately $178.5 million of Neighborhood Community Bank's assets. CharterBank will share in the losses on the asset pools covered under the loss-share agreement. The loss-sharing arrangement is projected to maximize returns on the assets covered by keeping them in the private sector. The agreement also is expected to minimize disruptions for loan customers.

The phone number will be operational this evening until 9:00 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time (EDT); on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., EDT; on Sunday from noon to 6:00 p.m., EDT; and thereafter from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., EDT. Interested parties can also visit the FDIC's Web site at http://www.fdic.gov/bank/individual/failed/neighbor.html.

The FDIC estimates that the cost to the Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF) will be $66.7 million. CharterBank's acquisition of all the deposits was the "least costly" resolution for the FDIC's DIF compared to alternatives. Neighborhood Community Bank is the 42nd FDIC-insured institution to fail in the nation this year, and the ninth in Georgia. The last FDIC-insured institution to be closed in the state was Community Bank of West Georgia, Villa Rica, earlier today.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America Selects Site in GA for Proposed Hospital Serving Patients in Southeast

/PRNewswire/ -- Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) announced today that it has selected Newnan, Ga., as the site of a proposed cancer treatment hospital that will serve patients in the Southeast and provide 500 new jobs in metro Atlanta.

"I'm excited that CTCA will now be closer to home," said Valerie Yurchuk, a cancer patient who treated at CTCA. "I could have gone to any cancer treatment program in the nation, but I came to CTCA because of its unique, patient-centered approach."

CTCA President and CEO Steve Bonner said the company chose Georgia as a gateway to better serve cancer patients throughout the Southeast.

"We are pleased to propose a new cancer treatment facility in the Southeast and thrilled to select Coweta County, one of the most sought-after destinations in metro Atlanta and Georgia," said Bonner. "Cancer patients living in the Southeast will have easier access to the high-quality, individualized, comprehensive care for which CTCA is known."

CTCA expects the new facility to generate $500 million in economic activity over the first five years of operation. With more than two-thirds of its patients expected to come from outside the state of Georgia, patients and their families will contribute to the growth and vitality of the local economy. The proposed fully digital Georgia facility will mark the fifth CTCA hospital to offer cancer patients a fully integrated care model, which combines the best traditional medical care to treat the cancer with scientifically supported integrative therapies to help manage side effects, strengthen the immune system and improve each person's quality of life.

The company will now file a notice of intent to apply for a certificate of need with the Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH), whose approval is necessary before CTCA can build and operate the facility. The Georgia hospital, if approved by DCH, will have 50 inpatient beds and more than 200,000 square feet.

"We're pleased to have CTCA here in Coweta County," said Bill Harrison, of the economic development authority. "They'll provide much-needed new jobs - and bring a vitally important service as well as hundreds of patients and family members to our region."

But more importantly, said Yurchuk, is proximity to the comprehensive care CTCA provides.

"CTCA didn't look at treating just my cancer, but looked at me as a whole person," she said. "My treatment plan was based on my individual needs. Everything was explained to me and I was the one making the decisions. That's the difference at CTCA - I was at the center of my care, from the very beginning."

The City of Newnan Begins Its Mosquito Control Program In June

The Public Works Department will begin its mosquito management program in June and continue through September, fogging Tuesdays and Fridays from 7pm to 10pm, weather conditions permitting. We use a truck mounted ULV (ultra low volume) aerosol fogger for spraying a synthetic pyrethroid product (a synthetic version of a natural insecticide produced by chrysanthemum flowers) to help control adult mosquito populations within the City. At this time, the Public Works Department does not have a program for larval monitoring or surveillance, nor does the Department use any larval control products.

We will accommodate special requests, including requests for not spraying near particular residences.

Residents and property owners can help abate existing mosquito breeding sources by clearing property of any potential breeding sites and preventing them from recurring. Here are some suggestions for what you can do help eliminate potential breeding grounds and increase your enjoyment of the outdoors:

Get rid of old tires, tin cans, buckets, bottles or any water-holding containers
Fill in or drain low places in your yard
Keep drains, ditches and culverts clean of weeds and trash to help drainage
Cover trash containers to keep water out
Repair leaky outside pipes and faucets
Empty plastic wading pools regularly and store them indoors when not in use
Fill in tree rot holes and hollow stumps
Change the water in bird baths and tray for plant pots at least once a week
Keep your grass cut short and shrubbery trimmed

Together we can eliminate potential breeding grounds and increase our enjoyment of the outdoors.

Because of ideal weather conditions, the mosquito population this spring and summer are predicted to be a bumper crop.

Mosquitoes are an all-too familiar summer nuisance, but much worse, they can carry West Nile virus or Eastern Equestrian Encephalitis for humans and heartworms for pets. West Nile virus can result in serious illness and sometimes death. The virus can infect humans, birds, mosquitoes, horses and other mammals and is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has bitten an infected bird.

City of Newnan Police and Fire Complete Special Incident Response Training

Some of the city of Newnan’s Police and Fire personnel were able to complete Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings (IRTB) training at the Energetic Research and Testing Center in Socorro, New Mexico. The police staff who attended was Deputy Chief Rodney Riggs and Detective Danny McDonald. The Newnan Fire Marshall Ricky Ayers and Captain John Byrom and was also able to attend.

The four hour performance level IRTB course provides basic information on explosive and incendiary devices that could be used as terrorist weapons. Classroom topics include:

Understanding the terrorist threat
Improvised explosive devices (IEDs)
Safety issues
Departmental or agency policies to ensure compliance with local requirements
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security provided all the funding for the public safety personnel to attend. It was no cost to the city for the travel and training opportunity.

“One of the most important aspects of this training is recognizing First Responders, local police officers and firefighters, may be able to detect unusual activity or devices, before solid intelligence is developed by State or Federal agencies, concerning an imminent bomb attack. In reviewing case studies of previous terrorist bombings, the terrorists' methods of identifying targets, recruiting associates, obtaining funds and materials and training for their attacks were discussed. This training gives the First Responder a basis for developing intelligence in their local areas, to prevent such attacks, said City of Newnan Police Deputy Chief Rodney Riggs.

EMRTC provides world class training in explosives, firearms and explosive site safety in association with The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, The U.S. State Department and other Federal and State agencies. Our course instructors are recognized worldwide as top explosives and WMD experts. EMRTC's facilities include a 40-square-mile field laboratory that includes over 30 separate test sites, gun ranges and research laboratories to use for training field exercises. Scogin Remembered by County

Coweta County employees and commissioners gathered with the family of Jimmy Scogin to remember Scogin in a ceremony on April 6, 2009.

James Hugh "Jimmy" Scogin was a Coweta County Public Works employee for more than 18 years, helping build many roads and buildings across the county. He was a certified corrections officer, a firearms instructor and a heavy equipment foreman. Jimmy was gravely injured in April of 2007 while supervising a crew working on a road to the Central Library. He died two months later from his injuries. He is the only known Coweta County employee to be killed in the line of duty in almost 90 years.

The Coweta County Commission voted to name the Coweta Couty Prison in honor and memory of Jimmy's efforts in establishing the range, his skill with a firearm, his role in training other corrections officers and his contributions to our county.

The permanent home of the firing range is uncertain now. It needs expanding and it is almost certain to be impacted by the widening of the Highway 34 bypass. Because of this uncertainty, a plaque mounted on a boulder was dedicated in a temporary home at the Coweta County Prison in memory of Scogin. (The boulder is one that was removed by Scogin during the building of the Hunter Recreation Complex.) When the new Firing Range is complete, the plaque will be moved there.

Main Street Newnan will host the Annual Spring Taste of Newnan on Thursday, April 16 from 5-8:30pm. This event gives people an opportunity to sample specialties of the best restaurants and caterers in the area.

Approximately 60 vendors will be set up around the Historic Courthouse Square. North Court, South Court and West Washington will be closed off to allow for vendor booths and walking space.

“Taste of Newnan gets bigger and better every year and has become a tradition for many families,” said Linda Kee, Director of Business Development.

New this year, The Braves Around Town, a mobile fan experience for the Atlanta Braves, will be setting up a speed pitch booth and a Braves t-ball booth in the Kidz Corner.

Rite Aid to Close Newnan, GA, Distribution Center in September 2009

(BUSINESS WIRE)--Rite Aid Corporation (NYSE:RAD) announced today that it is closing its distribution center in Newnan, Georgia. Closing is expected to be in late September.

The 297 associates employed at the facility and local and state officials are being notified today of the closing pursuant to the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. All associates will receive severance and outplacement services.

Rite Aid acquired the Newnan facility in June 2007 with its purchase of approximately 1,800 Brooks Eckerd stores and six distribution centers. The company said at the time of the acquisition that once all of the Brooks Eckerd stores were integrated into Rite Aid, it would look for opportunities to consolidate the distribution activities of its 14 distribution centers. The decision to close the Newnan facility is also part of Rite Aid’s initiative to improve operational efficiency throughout the company.

The 194 stores served by the Newnan distribution center will be served by other Rite Aid distribution centers.

“We have an excellent and dedicated workforce at the distribution center in Newnan, and they did an outstanding job during the integration of the Brooks Eckerd drugstore chain into Rite Aid,” said Wilson A. Lester, Jr., Rite Aid Senior Vice President, Supply Chain. “This closing has no reflection on them or the quality of their work, and we will do everything we can to assist them with finding new positions.”

Special ‘Artist of the Month Display’ at Newnan City Hall for April for GA Cities Week April 20-25

The ‘Artist of the month’ at City Hall helps kick off Georgia Cities Week for the month of April. There are seven artists being featured for the month of April. All the artwork being displayed this month celebrates the City of Newnan.

Cities across Georgia will be celebrating Georgia Cities Week, sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) to showcase and celebrate cities and the many services they provide. Based in Atlanta, GMA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that provides advocacy, educational, employee benefit and consulting services to its 500 member cities.

“Downtown Beauty” by Ellie Farrington
Ellie traveled from Maine to Georgia to be introduced to painting in oils through Tom Powers and the Newnan-Coweta Recreation Department. Perhaps best known for her paintings of flowers and ocean scenes, this painting is a departure from those themes. “Downtown Beauty” depicts the Court Square during a show sponsored by the Newnan-Coweta Art Association when antique cars were also on display.

“Goldens on the Square” by Dana Johnson
A native Texan, Dana digs into her roots of ranchers, teachers, artists, churchgoers and misfits. She paints on-site when possible, capturing the feel of the moment. Her goal is to depict scenes which elicit an emotional response. “Paint outside, everyday!” is her motto. She takes advantage of every day of good weather. Painting on the Square in Newnan, she saw the light reflected on Goldens in a way that intrigued her.

Jenny is a native of Newnan and a Newnan High School graduate. Working from her own travel photography, she paints landscapes with a lot of color. She also paints the ocean and buildings. She especially loves to paint lighthouses. She went to the library often as a child and has vivid memories of those times. She even remembers the details of the interior. Painting is very relaxing for her and when asked if she is attending art class, her response is “Try and stop me!”

A native of Carroll County, Lee has been painting almost thirty years. While winning awards, both cash and ribbons, she has continued to serve in leadership positions in several arts related associations. This stately old tree which stood in front of the Senior Citizen Center intrigued her because she imagined the history it had witnessed.

Another Texan, Rusty, has a mostly Louisiana background. The whimsical nature of this painting also reflects her take on life. It is a mixed media of graphite, watercolor and pen and ink that tickles the memory of those familiar with downtown Newnan. Her prints are available framed and unframed.

Rebecca closely observes the things around her and artistically presents them from her own viewpoint. She challenges herself with a variety of styles and mediums. She is originally from Ohio and has a degree in Earth Science Education. Her keen eye for detail is reflected in her artwork. The water tower was observed on the day that the tornado heavily damaged Atlanta. The view is from south to north.

Growing up in Newnan, Jean left after graduating high school, but returned twenty-five years later. She started art classes at “the old art house” and found it a great place for friendship, good food and new ideas for painting. Most of the artists she met are still her friends and painting buddies. Precious memories of this place always make her smile.

City of Newnan Occupational Taxes Due April 1st

For business owners, 2009 Occupational Tax Certificate Renewals (formerly Business Licenses) are due to the City of Newnan by April 1st.

“The penalty for late returns starts at 11.5%, with an additional 1.5% penalty per month thereafter,” says City Finance Director Katrina Cline. “We have mailed out approximately 2.300 renewals packets this year. Tax returns, including appropriate taxes, must received by the Finance Department by April 1st. Postmarks are not acceptable. There are no extensions or exceptions.”

Taxes can be paid in person at City Hall or by mail, as long as there are no changes to the information. Be sure to submit the renewal forms with the payment if paying by mail. Please call the city’s Finance department at 770-254-2351 if you have questions or need additional information.

Palmetto Dogs Mission

History: Since at least December 2008 3 dogs had been living on Interstate 85 at the Palmetto exit, exit 56. No one seemed to be able to actually find them. Once sighting them, they would be gone before we could stop. Someone from another rescue group dropped off 2 large bags of food in February between the grassy wooded area that divides the south on-ramp and the interstate itself. This is where she had last seen them, and when last seen one was extremely thin.

Once I heard about the situation I went out on a daily basis walking and looking for any signs of them. Finally, the first of March we spotted all 3 dogs laying in the sun on that same area. We were able to get two of the dogs, one a male Bluetick Coonhound mix and the other a female Pointer/Lab mix we think. When the male saw me you could tell he wanted to come but he was unsure, until I knelt down and talked to him and then he came to me and wanted to go right to the truck as if saying "Please, get me out of here!" The female was not so sure, but she wanted to be with him so she stayed close but would not come. It took some time, we got him back out of the truck and just sat there for a couple hours until we got her to come closer to him and then we lured her in to eat cheesecake with him and I was able to toss a looped rope over her head and pull her in. She was very thin with all rib, spine and hip bones exposed. The other dog which appears to be an Austrailian Shepherd took off like a bullet half way down the grass bank. She only stopped for a moment to look back but she turned and ran across the on ramp and into the woods.

The Bluetick mix and the Pointer-Lab mix they are doing well. All in all they are in good health with the exception of the male having an injured leg which is healing and the female being way too thin. They have tested negative for heart worms and parasites and have now had all their shots. The female is quite attached to the male. There is no telling how long they have actually been on their own or whether they have always been together or just met up along the way but she loves him. The vet believes he is approximately 2-3 yrs.

I am trying to find out if anyone has actually lost them, they are well behaved and seem to love truck rides. They seem to also be house-broken not having one accident yet. They are good natured happy dogs that also love children. They can dig under a fence but they do not appear to be jumpers and only seem to dig to get from one yard space closer to the house to be with me :) They are not trying to actually dig out of the yard. Not sure how they are with cats but they like the water.

With the good graces of both Guthrie Construction and Ken Kunkle, MCI Grading Superintendent, we were able to save two of these dogs. We are being allowed to continue tracking the last dog on the land where they are doing much work in hopes of saving the Aussie as well. If owners are not found, these dogs will need homes soon. Busy Weekend in Downtown Newnan

Main Street Newnan’s Spring Art Walk , Charles Wadsworth and Friends Concert and Major Motion Picture filming

This year’s Charles Wadsworth & Friends concert takes on special significance as it serves as a celebration of acclaimed pianist and musician Charles Wadsworth’s 80th birthday. This year’s concert will be this Saturday. This year also marks a turning point in Wadsworth’s career as he approaches an octogenarian status and looks forward to a less rigorous schedule. Wadsworth stated, “I’ve been involved in the Festival in Spoleto, Italy, for 50 years now and in the Spoleto USA Festival in Charleston for well over 30 years. I’ve enjoyed touring, but it’s involved traveling from one city to another, often without a break, and much of it has been international traveling for extended periods.”

“We could not be more excited to have a concert of this caliber returning to Newnan,” said Gina Snider, city of Newnan public information officer.

Tickets for the 7:30 pm event will be available at Scott’s Bookstore in Newnan, Morgan’s Jewelry in Ashley Park, and the Bank of Coweta at Thomas and at the window the night of the concert. General seating adult tickets are $20 and Senior/Student tickets are $15.

Main Street Newnan will host the Annual Spring Art Walk on Friday from 5-8pm. The event is a walking gallery show that takes guests into the stores of Downtown merchants to enjoy local art, refreshments and great conversation. The Art Walk will begin at Flint Gallery of Panoply on Greenville Street. Maps will be available at participating merchants with artist locations and information about the evening’s events.

“This is the biggest show we have had since the event started five years ago” said Linda Kee, Director of Business Development. “It’s exciting to see how much the Art Walk has grown.” Musicology will be providing live entertainment along the square. There will also be live music at Espresso Lane, Gridiron Grill, Ten East Washington and The Alamo. This year’s Art Walk is sponsored by The Preserve.

A major motion picture, "Zombieland," is scheduled for this weekend to shoot scenes in Newnan for the upcoming horror/comedy starring Woody Harrelson. Filming is scheduled to begin in downtown on Saturday. Shooting will take place on a portion of Greenville Street in the vicinity of East Broad Street and the Court Square. Shooting will also take place at a home on Wilcoxon Street and on LaGrange Street at the railroad overpass.

“We want to invite citizens to come out and experience downtown Newnan at its best with all the different wonderful events going on, said Gina Snider, city of Newnan public information officer. Citizens should be advised there will be some street closings on Sunday but detour routes will be provided.”

“Zombieland” is a production of Sony Pictures and Zombieland Productions, LLC. The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer. The post-apocalyptic film has been described as "Dumb and Dumber" meets zombies.

Coweta County and the City of Grantville to Dedicate Renovated Ballpark

Dedication of the newly renovated Grantville Ballpark will be Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 9:45 am. The approximately $2 million renovation was funded by Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) and, not only resulted in a beautiful, new 4- field ball park for South Coweta County, but also provided some of the infrastructure needed for the soon to be built Grantville branch of the Coweta County Public Library System

The day will begin with a parade of the South Coweta Baseball Association teams at 9 am beginning at Grantville City Hall and ending at the newly renovated ballpark on Colley Street. After cutting the ribbon to allow everyone in, a short dedication program will be held on the front, t-ball field featuring Coweta County Commissioner Tim Lassetter and Grantville Mayor Casey Houston. They will then turn the field over to South Coweta Baseball Association president Greg Chambers for Opening Day festivities. The program will end around 10:30 with the throwing of the season’s “First Pitch” from Commissioner Tim Lassetter to South Coweta Baseball Association player William Strickland.

“This is a terrific new ballpark,” said Tim Lassetter, Commissioner, district two. “We are so pleased to be able to open this park and we’re even more pleased to have had such a great working relationship between the county and folks at the City of Grantville.”

The City of Grantville has park property that adjoins this Coweta County Recreation property. In support of the project, the city donated five acres to complete the county portion of this park and also funded one half of the estimated engineering costs.

The improvements made to the park are the result of many hours of labor – particularly from the Coweta County Public Works Division. There was significant grading, clearing and demolition that had to be done to get this space ready for the facility. The use of prison and county skilled labor is estimated to have saved about $1 million in the total cost of this facility.

Improvements to the park include: four baseball fields, a full service comfort station with concession stand, restrooms and pressbox/scorekeeper room. They also include a new parking lot and lighting. In addition, the work that was done included a significant portion of shared infrastructure with the soon to be built library – including parking, water, sewer, stormwater, fire protection and a new connecting road.

The total project and improvements represent about $2 million – about $800,000 of which is in shared infrastructure with the library. Architect Kip Oldham designed the comfort station, engineering firm Clough Harbour did the site engineering and planning and Astra Group was the general contractor for the fields.

“SPLOST is vital to projects like these. Because Coweta County voters have continued to support SPLOST, we’ve been able to build projects like these – projects that add so much to our community,” said Lassetter.

SPLOST – the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax – is a one cent sales tax that Coweta voters must approve every 6-7 years. SPLOST dollars must be spent on capital projects, like this one. SPLOST allows the county to build this type of facility without adding the building cost to the general budget. Because it is a sales tax, anyone who shops in Coweta helps fund these projects. And as Coweta has become a regional shopping destination, shoppers from across central Georgia have contributed to these projects.

Grenzebach hosted Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce Enhanced Investors for the Inaugural Meeting of Enhanced Investor Engagement Series

Stefan Grenzebach, President and CEO of Grenzebach Corporation addressed the inaugural meeting of the Enhanced Investor Engagement Series, a new program of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce.

This year, the Chamber launched a specially created Enhanced Investor Engagement Series. Grenzebach shared his unique perspective about Coweta County’s major assets which drove the Grenzebach Corporation to locate in Newnan. The City of Newnan Fire Department Attends Bomb Threat Creditability Training at GEMA

The city of Newnan Fire department sent fifteen members of their team to Bomb Threat Training at GEMA.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) presented "Managing School Bomb Threats," a free class for education and law enforcement professionals. Topics covered planning for a bomb threat, how to identify a credible threat, search techniques, and adjudication of a bomb threat suspect. The seminar included with an explosives demonstration.

With the right tools and training, authorities can properly evaluate the threat and determine the best course of action, says Newnan Fire Chief Whitley.

GEMA School Safety Unit provides services that help schools have a safe and secure school year. GEMA’s school safety coordinators offer training and technical assistance to educators, emergency management and public safety personnel. Keep Newnan Beautiful is joining national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful (KAB) in the Great American Cleanup as they campaign for a cleaner, greener America. This year Keep Newnan Beautiful has a goal of having as many volunteers as possible.

Keep Newnan Beautiful will host its Great American Cleanup on March 14, 2009. The Cleanup will kick off at 9 am behind Newnan City Hall located 25 LaGrange Street. Cards for Kyara Benefit February 26

The University of West Georgia will host “Cards for Kyara,” a benefit show and sale in Gallery Two of the Humanities Building.

Local artists and UWG students have created dozens of artist trading cards that are miniature works of art sized 2.5 by 3.5 inches. The cards are on view in the gallery through March 6 and will be sold for $5 each at a reception on Thursday, Feb. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Funds raised through the sale of the cards will benefit Kyara Dzenis, a four-year-old Newnan resident who is recovering from gastric transposition surgery in a Michigan hospital.

Kyara drank a chemical that scarred her esophagus at the age of two. When her esophagus did not heal and swallowing became difficult, the family traveled to Michigan where doctors replaced the damaged esophagus with one created from stomach tissue.

Due to complications, Kyara is still in the hospital four months later with family members staying at a Ronald McDonald House. Friend of the family and UWG student Claire Hyde coordinated the event.

Kris is a displaying member of the Georgia Watercolor Society and a member of the Newnan Coweta Arts Association. Kris’s paintings are in private and public collections across the United States, Canada and Japan. This past fall she had two paintings chosen for the Georgia national fair in Perry Georgia. Her paintings are full of bright bold colors from abstract to realism. Using large brushes and lots of water her paintings are pretty loose. She says art doesn't always have to be serious; it just needs to be fun. She works in a series, and is best known for two larger than life women in swimsuits; fondly know as Miss Bea & Stella. Other series have been of fish, turtles, landscapes, over sized fruits, vegetables, lighthouses, sofas and animals.

You may recognize Kris from the Watercolor by Kristina show that she did on Newnan Utilities last year. Her work can be seen around town at Andre’s off the Square, Espresso Lane, Ten East Washington, and the Weber Eye clinic. She displays at the annual NCAA spring show on the square and at the annual NCAA Christmas show in November at the Rail Road depot in down town Newnan.

Kristina is a member of the Newnan-Coweta Art Association. NCAA meets the third Thursday each month (from September through May) at the Harriet Alexander Art Center on Hospital Road at 7:00 p.m. visitors and new members are welcome.

Coweta County Commission passes new Ordinances

The Coweta County Commission passed two ordinances on January 26, 2009 that regulate adult, sexually-oriented products and businesses in the county.

The first is a new ordinance for sexually oriented businesses. This ordinance completely replaces the old one and, while similar, does have some specific differences.

The new sexually oriented businesses ordinance retains the threshold of 25% for a business to be considered an adult bookstore. However, it does not mention some of the items that were in the old ordinance because they are dealt with in the obscenity ordinance, and it more clearly defines the 25% rule. One of the goals of the ordinance is to “regulate. . . . sexually oriented business through a narrowly tailored ordinance designed to serve the substantial government interest in preventing the negative secondary effects of sexually oriented businesses.”

The ordinance does this by designating a business as an adult bookstore if it meets one of the following criteria:
- at least 25% of the displayed merchandise is characterized by the emphasis upon specified sexual activities or specified anatomical areas; or
- At least 25% of the wholesale value of the displayed merchandise consists of the above mentioned items; or
- At least 25% of the retail value of the displayed merchandise consists of the above mentioned items; or
- At least 25% of the establishments revenues derive from the sale or rental, for any form of consideration, of the foregoing items; or
- At least 25% of the floor space for the display, sale and rental of the above mentioned items; or
- The establishment maintains at least 500 sq. ft. of its floor space for the display, sale, and/or rental of the foregoing items; or
- The establishment regularly offers for sale or rent at least 2000 of the foregoing items; or
- The establishment regularly features the foregoing items and advertises itself as a business that caters to adult sexual interests; or
- The establishment maintains an adult arcade.

The ordinance also changed the locations that are lawful for a sexually oriented business. The new ordinance requires that any sexually oriented business must be at least 1,000 feet from the parcel of any other sexually oriented business or any establishment licensed to sell alcohol at the premises. The ordinance also requires that any sexually oriented business be at least 1,000 feet from any parcel occupied by a school, religious institution, public park, recreation facility, licensed day-care center, or property used or zoned for residential purposes.

The second is a new obscenity ordinance. This is the first such ordinance for Coweta County. The state of Georgia had a similar statute that was struck down in 2006 because of its prohibition on advertising. The Coweta County ordinance does not address advertising and would therefore fall under other court cases approving obscenity laws similar to obscenity ordinance adopted by Coweta County. Because the State of Georgia has not yet replaced the state obscenity statute, it was appropriate for the county to include this regulation in our update of regulations regarding sexually oriented businesses.

Contrary to some earlier reports, this ordinance does NOT ban condoms or lubricants. This ordinance makes it unlawful for anyone to commercially “distribute or possess with the intent to distribute . . . any obscene material or any device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs." Unlike sex toys, condoms are primarily used for contraception and disease. They are not, and cannot under governing law, be subject to the obscenity ordinance.

The ordinance defines “material” to includes magazines, videos, DVDs, etc., but requires that the specific material in question cross the line from indecent to legally obscene. The Coweta ordinance uses a commonly accepted definition of obscenity that has been upheld by the United States Supreme Court.

Both of these ordinances are designed to balance the interests of protected speech with the recognized community interests in preventing commercial distribution of obscenity and in controlling the negative secondary effects of sexually oriented businesses. The obscenity ordinance essentially replaces a Georgia law that was in effect for thirty years, and the sexually oriented business ordinance reflects an update to a similar ordinance passed almost ten years ago. The ordinances are supported by a number of studies showing the detrimental effects of sexually oriented businesses. MAS*H at Newnan Community Theatre Company

A Mobile Army Surgical Unit from the Korean War has moved onto the Newnan Community Theatre Company's main stage for just six performances. M*A*S*H, the famous 4077th, is taking a brief tour in Newnan for the theatre's first show of their 2009 Season.

Richard Hooker wrote about his experiences as a surgeon during the Korean War. His book eventually became a movie, TV series, and play. Much loved and probably best well-known was the TV series, starring Alan Alda. The play (by Tim Kelly) features the characters now so famous - Hawkeye, Hot Lips Houlihan, Father Mulcahy, Trapper John, and Frank Burns.

One of the challenges for this production has been recreating Korean War-era barracks and hunting down older uniforms. The show is being directed by NCTC's managing director, Rick Olsen. This is Olsen's directorial debut. As a history buff and U.S. Air Force Retiree, Olsen was a good fit to direct this show.

The cast includes 25 adults, both NCTC veterans and newcomers. Darren Mathews, head of NCTC's Improv group, N.I.T.W.I.T.S., is portraying Hawkeye. JohnPaul Phillips is his buddy, Duke, and Chaz Ferguson is Trapper John. New to NCTC is John Chappell, portraying Col. Henry Blake. Also new to NCTC is Bill Monroe as Capt. Frank Burns. Last seen as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, Sam Gentry is Father Mulcahy. NCTC veteran actor Amy Beachaum is Margaret Houlihan.

Rounding out the cast is Reynolds Allen (Gen. Hammond), Scott Pollak (Cap. Waldowski), Stephen Pye (Ugly), RaShaan Smith (Spearchucker), Jamie French (Sgt. Devine), Christian Pollak (Radar), Brian Walsh (Pvt Lopez), Duck Kingsenamongkhol (Ho-Jon), Judie Hardin (Bridget), Heather Hyde (Janice), Megan Martin (Louise), Sarah Jordan (Nancy), Renee Gentry (Mercy), Brenda Naughton (Ruth), Kristin Owens (Mitzi), Kelsey Gentry (Fritzi), and Ashlee Sims (Agnes).

M*A*S*H will be performed only six times. Opening night is Friday, January 23rd at 8 pm. Performances following are: Saturday, January 23 at 8 pm; Sunday, January 25 at 2:30 pm; Thurday, January 29 at 8 pm; Friday, January 30 at 8 pm; and Saturday, January 31 at 8 pm.

Road Closure Set for East Broad Street, Newnan

Newnan Utilities is preparing to replace an existing water main and individual service lines as a part of the rehabilitation of East Broad Street. This work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, January 20th, and will take about a week to complete, according to officials with Newnan Utilities. East Broad Street will be closed to traffic for the duration of this phase of utility work from the intersection of Pinson Street/ Farmer Street to Roberts Road. Local traffic will be accommodated as best as possible. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead. Detours will be marked.

Senator Seabaugh to Host Page Day at Capitol

State Senator Mitch Seabaugh (R-Sharpsburg) will host his annual Page Day at the Capitol for students from his district, sixth grade and above, on Thursday, February 12, 2009. The students will serve as pages for the Senate on that day.

“I encourage students, particularly those interested in civics and government, to take advantage of this excellent opportunity to experience the legislative process first-hand,” Sen. Seabaugh said. “This is a chance for students to experience American politics and watch the state legislature work.”

Pages are granted access to the Senate Chamber for the day and are responsible for delivering messages to the senators on the floor. They may also be called on by senators to run special errands. Each page is sponsored by their local senator. They will receive a certificate, $10 honorarium and are scheduled to have their pictures taken with Lt. Governor Cagle and Senator Seabaugh.

Parents and teachers who would like to nominate students to serve as pages should contact Sen. Seabaugh’s office at 404-656-6446. Students must be 12 years of age or older. The day will count as an excused absence from school. Please submit any page requests as soon as possible. Greentop Bridge Closed Indefinitely

The Greentop Road Bridge over the CSX railroad closed December 23, 2008, until further notice. Repairs and/or replacement scheduling is underway.

The closure came after the county was notified by GDOT today that the bridge required immediate closing due to deterioration of the bolts and gusset plates. The bridge was last inspected on July 1, 2008 when the bolts and gusset plates were noted as a deficiency, but not sufficient enough to warrant closing. GDOT has been reviewing all bridges, in particular those with similar type construction as the one that collapsed in Minnesota. The Greentop Bridge uses gusset plates, similar in construction to the Minnesota bridge.

Because of its known deficiencies, the bridge was already on Coweta County’s replacement schedule. Engineering is 80% complete and the environmental documents have already been sent to the federal government. If funding can be determined soon, right of way acquisition can begin and the project can be let to contract in April/May. The projected construction time is 12 – 18 months and the estimated value of the project is $2.1 million.

The Greentop Bridge replacement was part of the Georgia DOT TIP (Transportation Improvement Program) and was one of two that Coweta County submitted for possible funding through the economic stimulus program. Canon Road at White Oak Creek is the other bridge submitted for funding. It is expected that the bridge cannot be repaired given the whole of its current state but county officials will be contacting GDOT to see if anything further can be done to shorten the amount of time the bridge will be out of service. The primary detour route is US 29 N to Herring Road.

Yates Takes Home Big Award

Newnan, Georgia's Jerry Yates came out a big winner at the 2008 Roots Music Association's Award Ceremony, held on November 15th, in San Marcos, Texas.

The ceremony, was part of the World United Music Festival and Radio Conference, presented by the Roots Music Association and the United States Entertainment Forces. The festival and conference were the premier radio and music industry networking events for professionals involved in the music industry, around the globe. The event's focus was on the national and international radio, music industry, and related press, within the worldwide music market, providing a platform, primarily for independent musicians and artists, but including established performers, to gain exposure and be heard.

Although bad weather forced the cancellation of the music festival Saturday night and Sunday, the event was not a total wash out.

Rev. Jerry Yates, a solo Gospel artist, who sings, writes songs, and plays acoustic guitar, with a country blues, rockabilly style, performed Friday afternoon, showcasing his talents before a small, but enthusiastic crowd. However, the big event for Yates came during the award ceremony, which was held in the Embassy Suites Hotel, in San Marcos, when he walked away with the 2008 Roots Music Association's "Gospel Artist of the Year Award"! Other nominees in the "Gospel Category" included Ricky Scaggs and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

"It was absolutely impossible for me to win" Yates said, after the ceremony. "But God is known for doing the impossible, and I know it was only by His grace that I won! I need to hurry and get back home, to see if I'm dreaming" he said.

Keith Brooking, a Coweta-County native whose mother raised numerous foster children, was selected for his years of work with Atlanta area foster children and children in need. His Keith Brooking Children's Foundation, a 501(c)3 public charity, is devoted to serving the needs of foster children and the agencies that serve them throughout metro Atlanta.

Keith was born and raised in Coweta County, Georgia, where he played football for East Coweta High School, and went on to play for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He was drafted by the Falcons in the 1st round of the 1998 NFL draft. Since that time, Keith has been a 5 time Pro – Bowl selection, and distinguished himself as a leader both in the Falcon’s organization and the Georgia community. Keith Brooking is one of the few active NFL players who have played their entire football career (high school, college, professional) in the same state.

Keith founded the Keith Brooking Foundation in 2003 to serve the children of the metro Atlanta area. He was selected a two time Man of the Year by the Falcons due to his tireless work in the metro – Atlanta community. The Keith Brooking Foundation has quickly become famous through it’s Locker 56 program, a program designed to provide athletic shoes to children who cannot afford them. Two Road Closures

Two Road Closures were approved by the Coweta County Commission at the December 4 meeting.

1 – Shaw Road will be closed December 8-11, weather permitting. This is part of the Raymond Hill/Major/Shaw/Fischer Road improvement. This will allow the connection of Shaw Road to its new intersection with Major Road. Detours include Pete’s Road to Palmetto Tyrone Road. At the same time, the Major Road traffic will be directed to the new location. This move will require the intersection of Fischer and Raymond Hill/Major to become a 4-way stop until the new signal is installed.

2 – Bill Estes Road in southeast Coweta County will be closed December 8-11 for a cross drain replacement

UPDATE:

Because the weather forecast calls for rain on Wednesday and Thursday of next week, we have received permission to close Shaw Road tomorrow, Saturday, December 6 through Tuesday, December 9 instead of as originally scheduled for Monday the 8th. It will still be closed for 4 days as planned, weather permitting. If the timeframe has to be extended beyond the 9th, we will notify you of the change.

Confirmed Rabies Case in Newnan

According to the city of Newnan animal warden, Cyndi Hoffman, there was a confirmed case of rabies in the city. There were no humans affected with the disease.

On Wednesday, December 5th, a resident reported a raccoon in her yard was acting strangely. Officer Hoffman went out to the resident off Pitts Street. The raccoon was then caught on a restraining pole and humanely euthanized. The body was sent to the lab where results came back positive for rabies.

Residents are urged to always keep family pets updated on vaccinations. Call your vetnarian as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.

“These vaccinations are critical to your families’ and pets’ well- being,” said Officer Hoffman. People do not realize the long and intense treatments needed for humans if bitten by a rabid animal and symptoms occur it is too late. Rabies has a 99% rate fatality for humans and animals,” continued Officer Hoffman.

Officer Hoffman wanted to remind everyone there is a leash law (4-41) and a vaccination law (4-44) in the city of Newnan. Citations will be issued if caught breaking these laws. If you need to review these ordinances please log onto www.ci.newnan.ga.us

Symptoms of Rabies for animals and humans

Symptoms usually develop between 20 and 60 days after exposure. Rabid animals may become aggressive, combative, and highly sensitive to touch and other kinds of stimulation. And they can be vicious. This is the "furious" form of rabies, the kind traditionally associated with mad dogs.
There is also a "dumb" form of the disease in which the animal is lethargic, weak in one or more limbs, and unable to raise its head or make sounds because its throat and neck muscles are paralyzed. In both kinds of animal rabies, death occurs a few days after symptoms appear, usually from respiratory failure.

Rabies infection in humans begins with symptoms such as fever, cough, or sore throat followed in several days by more serious and rapidly progressing symptoms such as restlessness, hallucinations and seizures. The final stage is coma and death.

Vaccinate your pets.
Do not approach any animal unknown to you or your family.
Secure trash in garbage cans with tight fitting lids.
Feed and water your pets inside your home to avoid attracting wild animals.

That is why the Fayette County School System’s Exceptional Children’s Department and Exceptional Ops are hosting a Transition Fair called Building Alliances at McIntosh High on January 13 from 7-9 p.m.

Admission to the fair is free and open to students with disabilities and their families from both Coweta and Fayette counties.

The purpose of the fair is to provide information about services that are available in the community. Coweta and Fayette organizations that provide services for students with disabilities, whether they are still in school or transitioning out, will be on hand to discuss the assistance they offer and how they can help meet the various needs of disabled students and adults. Support and advocacy groups, employment preparation, vocational rehabilitation, supported living agencies, tutoring and recreation are a few examples of the services that will be exhibited.

Coweta Business Woman Celebrates 20 Years

In 1988 long-time Coweta resident Sharon Massengale had a dream. 22 years old and a recent graduate of Carroll Tech as a Master Cosmetologist, she envisioned herself running her own business. Engaged to marry another seasoned Coweta resident, Ricky Ragan, he encouraged Sharon to turn her dream into a reality. With additional support from her mother, Martha Massengale Tinsley and Sharon’s new step-dad, William Tinsley, she took the plunge. In early October of ’88 Sharon opened her own beauty salon. Two weeks later she married Ricky and became Sharon Ragan, owner and operator of The Upper Cut in Sharpsburg.

Sharon and her family had lived in Coweta County, Sharpsburg to be exact, since the age of four. Growing up active in the community, Sharon became captain of the East Coweta Cheerleading Team and ultimately 1984 ECHS Homecoming Queen. After graduation, she attended West Georgia College but was unsure what her future held. One thing she thoroughly enjoyed was doing her dorm mates’ hairdos. After a few years of that, her mom and friends encouraged her to become a Master Cosmetologist; Sharon took their advice and transferred to Carroll Tech.

The Upper Cut was originally located in her hometown of Sharpsburg for almost five years before moving to Turin. Sharon then stayed in Turin for ten years. In 2003 she decided to relocate to Sharpsburg at the newly constructed strip mall, Plaza 154 on Highway 154. Many employees have helped The Upper Cut to be successful: some of her member design team are Master Cosmetologists Kimberly Worley, Deborah Carabetta, Marsha Morris, and Master Barber Doc. Karlee Sargent is an assistant who is currently attending cosmetology school and plans to work at The Upper Cut upon graduation. High school student Kara Somerville serves as receptionist when not in school at Northgate. Sharon’s Administrative and Personal Assistant is hard-working Heather Rainey.

Sharon’s daughters are following in mom’s footsteps, both attending East Coweta High School. Lauren is a senior and ECHS cheerleader, and Lindsey, a sophomore, is captain of her cheerleading squad. The entire family is active at nearby Crossroads Church. Congratulations to Sharon Ragan, one of Coweta County’s successful female entrepreneurs!

Southeastern Ballet Company To Perform at Ashley park, Nov. 29 and 30

Southeastern Ballet Company (SBC), principal dancers and soloists will perform highlights from its upcoming production, Le Petit Nutcracker Sweet, along with guest students from Classical Dance Theatre (CDT), at the Tree Lighting festivities at Ashley Park in Newnan on Saturday, November 29. SBC and CDT dancers will take the outdoor stage between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. that evening.

On Sunday, November 30, SBC and CDT dancers will perform excerpts from Le Petit Nutcracker Sweet at Barnes and Noble bookstore, also in Ashley Park. Show times are 3:00, 4:00, and 5:00 p.m. In addition, Barnes and Noble will be hosting a bookfair to benefit SBC, a non-profit professional dance company, based in Newnan. Barnes and Noble customers making purchases that weekend can support the work of SBC in the community by printing out and using one of the attached vouchers or by mentioning voucher # 393876 to the cashier upon checkout. Customers can use this voucher number between November 29 and December 5 at any Barnes and Noble in the U.S. to help support SBC’s artistic work.

SBC volunteers and costumed dancers will also be providing complimentary holiday gift-wrapping at the Newnan Barnes and Noble store during the November 29th and 30th weekend from 12:00 noon until 9:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 12:00 noon until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.

SBC will host performances of its entire production of Le Petit Nutcracker Sweet on Saturday, December 6 and 13. Show times are 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. both days. SBC principal dancers and soloists, along with Classical Dance Theatre student dancers, will enchant and delight audiences in this sweet treat of a performance to be held at the Classical Dance Theatre studio at 1065 Sullivan Road in Newnan. Seating is limited, so $8 tickets should be purchased well in advance at the CDT studio. Nominate a "Citizen of the Year" for Coweta County

On January 15, 2009, Coweta County will honor its next Citizen of the Year, and the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce wants your nominations by Friday, December 19. Nomination forms are available through the Chamber.

"The Citizen of the Year Award was established by the Chamber in 1992 to recognize individuals with outstanding leadership and citizenship within the community," said Willie Boyd, community volunteer, Chamber board member and Citizen of the Year in 2006. "These are people who demonstrate exemplary vision, civic pride and a strong commitment to a better Coweta County."

Nominees must be residents of Coweta County and must focus their efforts in the county and surrounding area.
